Spend Time Outside and Stay Sun-Safe

You might be sick of hearing it.

In fact, we’re pretty sure you are.

But it is SO important to understand how bad the sun is for your skin! Your skin is the largest organ in your body.

It is the most exposed to harsh elements, like the sun. And, while a little sun can do a whole lot of good, just a little more starts causing damage on a cellular level.

Is the Sun Bad for My Skin?

Yes…and no. You hear a lot of information out there about how hard the sun is on your skin. And, you will better understand this when you realize how the sun is GOOD for your skin.

Your skin uses the sun to absorb vitamin D and produce serotonin. The hormone serotonin is a feel-good hormone. That is the reason it feels SO good to us to lie out in the sun for long periods of time.

Without sun exposure, you will experience a dip in your serotonin and vitamin D levels.

Sunblock, hats and clothing will stop the skin from getting these beneficial things from the sun.

But, I Thought Sun Exposure Increases the Risk for Cancer. Does it?

It DOES. And, here is the really tricky part of this. Too much natural light is very damaging to the skin and could cause some extremely serious health issues down the road.

Experts recommend only 15 minutes of sun without any blocks each day. That might seem like a lot, but 15 minutes isn’t even enough time to pull out a handful of weeds from the yard or take the dog for a walk.

Plus, most of us don’t apply sunscreen as often as we should, since it will only do a good job of keeping harmful rays off the skin if you reapply frequently.

So, the general advice is basically to completely cover yourself whenever you get near a window or even think about going outside.

Balance in all things is important, and that means leaning much more heavy-handed on the side of sunblock.

The sun sucks the moisture right out of the skin, leaving it thinner, drier and more wrinkled than it should be.

Can Sun Damage Be Undone?

While the cancer risk is a big deal and our primary motivator to respect the sun, it isn’t the only threat. Your skin can go through premature aging because of sun exposure.

Photoaging is the term for the leathery skin that has been wrinkled excessively from continued exposure to the sun. This leads to skin that is unlike natural aging and includes:

  • Sunspots and skin discoloration
  • Leathery skin
  • Deep wrinkles
  • Coarse, dry areas

When we were young, we wanted to make our skin glow with the summer sun. The tanned and rosy-cheeked glow of summer does have a ruddy appeal.

But, as you age you long for the glow of youth—the baby-soft skin and smoothness. The sun sucks the moisture right out of the skin, leaving it thinner, drier and more wrinkled than it should be.

If you continue to stay in the sun, the skin’s condition will worsen. Ultimately, you might feel forced to turn to invasive dermatology treatments including:

  • Botox to block muscle contraction that forms wrinkles.
  • Chemical peels to remove the top skin layers with irritating chemicals to stimulate new skin.
  • Dermabrasion or microdermabrasion that scrapes off old skin and may reduce mild issues.
  • Laser skin resurfacing with high-energy light that will burn away damaged skin, like fine lines.
  • Dermal filler injections that inject a soft tissue filler to replace lost collagen

Not only are these treatments often uncomfortable and expensive, they also aren’t permanent. The things you do to fix your skin will eventually slip back into the old familiar lines of your face.

Try This Non-Invasive Skin Rejuvenation Solution

Your face takes on the brunt of your skin exposure. Every day, as you run errands or just walk out to get the mail, your skin is exposed.

How to Stay Safe in the Sun

To have fun and keep your skin safe, you should have a game plan for the sun. Here are some helpful tips for reducing your sun exposure to keep it at a safe daily level.

Set a Timer

Remember, you should only be out 15 minutes per day before you are covered in a solid shade or by protective layers. You’d be shocked at how fast that time goes. Set a timer to make sure you aren’t planning on 15 minutes and actually staying out for an hour.

Rock the Hat

Pick out a fabulous, wide-brimmed hat to wear when you will be out in the sun for more than 15-minutes. This hat will help protect your scalp and hair, as well as your face and neck. These are all areas that can burn easily if they aren’t protected.

Plan for Shade

If you have an area of the house that you really enjoy, it’s a great idea to set up a feature that offers overhead shade. A shade sail is extremely popular in Australia for going over a patio or pool area to offer protective shade. You could also opt for a large umbrella, a temporary instant canopy or a retractable awning that will give sun protection when you are out without forcing you to shift to shade-loving landscaping.

Think Light and Airy

Layering up with lightweight fabrics is a great way to add more protection for your skin. Unbleached cotton naturally absorbs UV rays. Shiny polyesters and lightweight silks can reflect radiation to protect you. While you might think a tight fit is going to offer the most protection, SkinCancer.org recommends a loose fit with tightly woven fabrics so they don’t stretch to allow the sunlight to pass through. Some clothing will even tell you how much protection you are getting with a UPF label.

Reapply, Reapply, Reapply!

Few people remember to keep slathering on the sunscreen (largely because it is a pain!). But, adding that protective coating every 2 hours (or after sweating or swimming) makes a huge difference. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside. Apply sunscreen EVEN if it is cloudy out!

While SPF 15 is appropriate for walking the dog or short activities of occasional exposure, you should be using SPF 30 for things like hiking, running, biking, swimming and gardening. Use water-resistant sunblock to reduce how quickly it washes off, (but know that even “very water-resistant” will only stay effective for up to 80 minutes of swimming).
