The Label Decoder
Twenty words on the back of the jar.
Any jar, not just ours. Read this once and the ingredient list stops being a foreign language. Keep it; it does not expire.
Three rules before the words.
- The ingredient list is in order of amount, most first. The first five entries tell you most of what you need to know.
- One name can stand for many things. "Fragrance" is a single word that can cover dozens of undisclosed components.
- The front of the jar is marketing. The back is regulated. When they disagree, believe the back.
- Aqua (Water)
- The first word on almost every label, because most creams are mostly water. Not filler by itself: water is the base the rest is built into. What matters is what follows it.
- Glycerin
- A humectant: it draws water toward the skin and holds it there. One of the oldest and most reliable ingredients in skincare, and a good sign near the top of a list.
- Fragrance (Parfum)
- A single word that can stand for a blend of many components the label does not have to name. It exists to make the product smell pleasant, not to care for skin, and it is among the most common causes of irritation from cosmetics.
- Sodium Hyaluronate
- The label name for hyaluronic acid in its salt form. A humectant that binds many times its weight in water, which is why it appears in products aimed at a plumper, more hydrated look.
- Anything ending in "-peptide"
- Not one ingredient but a family. Peptides are short chains of amino acids, and which one a label names matters: palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and copper tripeptide-1 are different things with different research behind them. A vague "peptide complex" tells you less than a named one.
- Retinol
- A form of vitamin A and one of the most studied ingredients in skincare. Strengths vary widely between products, and it can be irritating at first, which is why labels often pair it with soothing ingredients.
- Niacinamide
- A form of vitamin B3, common in products aimed at a more even-looking tone and comfortable skin. Gentle, stable, and inexpensive, which is why it appears in creams at every price.
- Panthenol
- Provitamin B5. A softening, soothing humectant that helps skin feel calm and look supple. Another quiet workhorse that shows up far beyond skincare, in everything from haircare to wound dressings.
- Dimethicone (and other "-cones")
- Silicones. They fill in texture instantly and leave a smooth, velvety feel, which is why so many primers rely on them. The effect sits on the surface and rinses away; it is finish, not care.
- Tocopherol
- Vitamin E. An antioxidant that also helps protect the oils in the formula itself from going off. Near the end of a list it is often there for the product as much as for you, and that is a legitimate job.
- Ascorbic Acid
- Vitamin C in its most studied form, associated with a brighter look. It is famously unstable: it degrades with light and air, so packaging and freshness matter as much as the word on the label. Derivatives like sodium ascorbyl phosphate trade some potency for stability.
- Ceramides
- Lipids that occur naturally in the skin's outer layer, where they help it hold moisture and feel resilient. In a cream they support that barrier feel, and they appear in everything from pharmacy staples to prestige jars.
- Squalane
- A light, stable oil, today usually made from sugarcane or olives, that closely resembles oils the skin produces itself. It softens without heaviness and suits most skin types, which is why it has become so common.
- Plant stem cells
- Extracts grown from plant cell cultures, often named by their source, like citrus or edelweiss. The phrase sounds medical; on a label it means a plant-derived extract, and the honest question to ask is which plant and what the extract is standardized to.
- Phenoxyethanol
- A preservative, usually near the end of the list. Preservatives are not the enemy: an unpreserved water-based cream would spoil on your shelf. Regulators cap its concentration, and at those levels it is one of the better tolerated options.
- Parabens
- An older family of preservatives, now rare because shoppers turned against them. "Paraben-free" on the front tells you what is absent; it says nothing about what preserves the formula instead, which is a fair thing to check on the back.
- Alcohol Denat.
- Denatured alcohol, used to make formulas feel light and dry down fast. In small amounts it is a texture tool; high on the list it can leave skin feeling tight or stripped. Fatty alcohols, below, are a different thing entirely.
- Cetearyl Alcohol
- A fatty alcohol: waxy, softening, and nothing like the alcohol above. It thickens creams and keeps oil and water from separating. "Alcohol-free" products often contain it, legitimately, because the term refers to the drying kind.
- Carbomer
- A texture ingredient that turns a liquid into a gel and keeps the formula uniform. It does nothing for skin directly and is not meant to; a label is partly a recipe, and some words are simply the cooking.
- "Dermatologist tested"
- A front-of-jar phrase with no fixed legal meaning: it can mean one dermatologist looked at one test. The same goes for "clinically proven" without a stated study. Unregulated phrases live on the front; the regulated truth is the list on the back.
