Top 6 Anti-Aging Breakthroughs

Posted by Jackie Wicks on

For generations, people have tried to stop the hands of Father Time from showing the signs of aging on their skin.

Thanks to medical and technological breakthroughs, people now have the ability to look younger and feel their best when they look in the mirror.

What are these breakthroughs, you ask?

Great question!

Here are six anti-aging breakthroughs that made a name for themselves in the beauty and health realms.

1. Antioxidants

Antioxidants have topped the list of skin-care and anti-aging ingredients for a while.

They help fight aging by battling the free radicals that can cause skin to look older because they leave wrinkles and dull skin cells in their wake.

Antioxidants help get rid of the unstable molecules that exist when people are exposed to sun or pollution—both of which gobble up the skin's supply of collagen (the protein that keeps skin taut, firm, and bouncy).

When applied topically, antioxidants can disarm and neutralize free radicals before they have a chance to cause damage to the skin.

Because of this, they play an important role in the overall application of anti-aging processes.

There are many antioxidants available on the market today.

CoQ10 and vitamins E and C have been shown to be particularly beneficial to people who want to slow the signs of aging.

2. Peptides

Peptides are small proteins that are in charge of stimulating collagen production, and they've been aiding skincare regimens for a while.

Peptides have been shown to produce a mild, Botox-like effect on the skin because they help the body inhibit the release of neurotransmitters (the elements that keep facial muscles intact so wrinkles don't form).

Some peptide formulations also help stimulate cell turnover, eliminating dull, unhealthy cells and making way for fresher, newer cells to come to the surface.

3. Vitamin A

Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A.

They often come in prescription forms, such as Retin A or Renova, but can also be found in over-the-counter skincare products.

They help prevent the signs of aging in two ways.

First, they help stimulate collagen production, giving people who use it a firmer look and feel to their skin.

Second, they help decrease the process of collagen breakdown, ensuring that the body's naturally produced collagen stays within the skin cells where it belongs.

Applying vitamin A, or the retinoids that are produced from vitamin A, at least three times a week can significantly decrease the skins of wrinkling.

Retinol products are a great alternative to in-office procedures, which can be both costly and invasive.

While some people with super sensitive skin might experience redness or irritation, the side effects (if any) are typically fairly mild.

4. Anti-Aging Sunscreens

The sun offers humans a great way to get vitamin D, but it can also wreak havoc on skin.

Fortunately, two breakthroughs in the anti-aging sunscreen realm (Mexoryl SX) and Helioplex help make sunscreen ingredients more effective and protective.

Combined, these elements help the body defend against the signs of aging by blocking short UVA rays.

Most people know the damage of UVB rays—the ones that cause your skin to burn if you're out in the sun without protection for too long—but not everybody understands the importance of protecting themselves against UVA rays.

Both of the aforementioned ingredients not only help keep short UVA rays from getting to the skin, but they also offer long-lasting protection so people don't have to constantly apply their sunscreen protection.

From an anti-aging standpoint, these two ingredients can be your best friends.

When combined with antioxidants and other ingredients found in moisturizers and day creams, you can experience a sensational level of protection from the sun's damaging rays.

5. Oxygen Therapy

Sure, aging is a natural process, but not everybody is on board with aging gracefully, and recently, scientists in Israel may have found a new way to help people say "no" to Father Time.

The researchers used oxygen therapy to discover that the adult blood cells that went through the process came out growing younger.

The team used a pressure chamber with high-pressure oxygen.

Not only did the study find that the aging process was halted, but two major processes associated with aging and the illnesses that come with age were also stopped.

The study took place over just three months, and in that time, the participants' bodies were shown to display a cellular level that was 25 years younger than when they started the experiment.

The study found that up to 38% of participants' telomeres were increased.

Telomeres get shorter as humans age; the shorter the telomere, the more at-risk a person is for diseases associated with old age.

People with shorter telomeres have been known to die sooner than those with longer telomeres.

6. Zombie Cells

In 2020, the MIT Technology Review presented key findings of the major players in the anti-aging space.

Among those, the Methuselah Foundation was recognized for its work with senescent cells, which have been shown to have a very profound impact on humans' loss of function as they age.

Senescent cells are usually killed by the immune system, but as people age, the presence of these cells begins to accumulate.

The result is the appearance of zombie cells—those which can't resume normal function, but they also don't die, either.

Zombie cells aren't harmless; they play a role in age-related diseases, largely because of the mixture of secretion they produce.

Matthew Scholz, co-founder and CEO of Oisin Biotechnologies, has a new way of approaching these zombie cells.

Sholtz's research indicates that these senescent cells can be targeted in a way that intervenes with the zombie cells and mitigates the effects of age-related diseases.
